A BRIEF HISTORY
Taree is located on the Mid North Coast Of New South Wales approximately two hours driving time north from Newcastle.

Prior to white settlement, the aboriginal tribes of the Biripai, Ngamba and Worimi, inhabited the Manning Valley. The Manning River under-wrote their existence providing seafood and tropical fruits that lined the river.

Indeed the name Taree came from the Aboriginal name Tareebit" which translated means "Fruit of the Wild Fig".

European recognition of the Manning Valley dates back to Captain Cook's voyage along the east coast in 1770 when he named the mountain ranges to the north of Taree as South, Middle and North Brother Mountains.

John Oxley first explored the Manning Valley in 1818 when he named Harrington, on the mouth of the Manning River. Later that same year he named the second Manning River outlet Farquhar Lake, believing it to be a lake rather than a river outlet. Today, the area is known as Old Bar.

In 1831 William Wynter, an ex-naval officer, was granted 2560 acres of the then unknown country adjacent to the new river named by Robert Dawson after William Manning, Deputy Governor of the influential Australian Agricultural Company. So commenced the settlement of what is known today as the Manning Valley.

Taree Leagues Sports Club relocated to it's present location in 1977. A major refit in 2000 resulted in a very modern clubhouse with excellent facilities including two bowling greens, full bar facilities, Keno and TAB.

Taree Leagues Sports Club has 3,000 members and is located at the northern end of Taree amongst a large residential area and the Taree Recreation Centre which is made up of sporting fields. The club provides excellent comfort and the friendly and relaxed atmosphere coupled with excellent service is frequently commented on by visitors.
